Learning to forage for wild food in the midwest
Last week I went out foraging for wild foods with my friend Kyle, of the cheesemaking friends named Kyle. I’d never Foraged, though I did grow up nibbling every new plant I came across in my wanders across the countryside, from wild plums and mulberries to tasting unfamiliar leaves – so I’m pretty open to collecting foods in the wild.
We went out looking for morels, asparagus and garlic mustard.
After wandering around the state parks north of Des Moines – and behind our art center – we found no morels or asparagus, but brought home quite the find of garlic mustard.
I also caught a baby bull snake – because I’ll pick up anything I find – and found a nicely built little firepit.
