My love affair with my reel mower
I was not paid to review this mower. I just love it. I did, however, include Amazon Affiliate links in this post.
My Fiskars Momentum 5-blade reel mower is a thing of beauty. I originally wrote this as a comparison post: it versus other reel mowers, reel mowers up against gas-powered mowers. But I just love my mower. Here’s why.
It fucking cuts grass. Like a boss.
I tried two other reel mowers before we bought the Fiskars, and I hated them. They were difficult to maneuver, didn’t cut grass for shit, and one made a horrible noise.
When I’m done mowing, maintenance is as simple as wiping down each blade with WD-40 and spraying a bit into the wheels. That’s it. It’s sturdy, it self-sharpens. Fiskars makes a fine tool.
And best: there’s no running to the store for gas, no fiddling with the choke, no scraping caked grass out from underneath the mower.
It has a fly wheel.
Other reel mowers do NOT have a fly wheel – meaning that they’re harder work to push up slopes and cut grass at the same time. The fly wheel means your blades are sort of spring-loaded.
It won’t chop up snakes.
That traumatized me.
Almost silent. Just a soft whirrr or maybe tick-tick-tick.
It’s the only reel mower I found which cuts above 3.5 inches.
This is an important part of organic lawn care.
Of course it has weaknesses: I can’t let our grass get TOO long – over about six inches – or the mower starts missing patches. The Fiskars sucks for edging, so I take the weedwhacker out once a month for trims. It’s not self-propelled – but it’s a fantastic workout.
The bottom line is: if you’re in the market for a mower, and you’re thinking of getting a reel mower, the Fiskars Momentum is the only reel mower you should consider buying.
